- What to expect/Full description/Itinerary
Day1: We start the journey from the small town of Bajram Curri, which is 350 m above sea level, a city with historical values that bears the name of Bajram Curri, an Albanian national hero. The city has two statues, the statue of Bajram Curri and the statue of Azem Hajdari. The beauty of this city is added by the museum located in the center of the town. We start gently heading up to the village of Markaj known for its colorful nature as we smell the scent of the wonderful medicinal plants cultivated nearby the village. The village, which is situated at approximately 10 km from the city of Bajram Curri, is distinguished for its beautiful landscape in the midst of a rich chestnut plantation which surrounds the city. From the altitude of 600 m from the village of Markaj we keep pushing up to the small glacial lake of Ponari situated at an altitude of 1400 m.
Ponar Lake is one of the main lakes in the district of Tropoja, as it affects the climate of the area, the spread of vegetation and the level of fauna development. Surrounded by mountains and high trees, this lake is worth visiting.
Weather permitting, we can enjoy a nice summer bath in the glacial lake. After a wonderfull lunch nearby the lake we prepare for an epic descent to Bajram Curri.
Day2: Today we start another wonderful day cycling to the village of Bujan. The village is part of the Krasniqe tribe and is its largest village of this tribe in the area. Bujan is also known as one of the important centers of “Gjakova Highlands” today a city in Kosovo. To get to Bujan we will cross from “Dubrava”, a road much photographed even by about by many foreigners, with tall trees on both sides that give it a magical look. While in Bujan, we will pay a visit to the Tower of Mic Sokol, another heroic figure of North Albania, a nationalist figure, and a strong fighter of the “Albanian League of Prizren”, a movement for which he fell as a martyr. This tower (Kulla) is now a historical monument of great value and it stands as the best representation of the local architecture very visible throughout the country. The tower was built to suit different purposes such as: a defensive tower in case of war for which it had several small windows different from the normal windows through which the fighter could shoot. Another function of the tower was as a place of gatherings. So, the elders of the village would get together to talk about daily matter or in time of war, the organisation of the village. From the tower we cycle to Valbona bridge, where we can take a short break for a quick swim in the clear waters of Valbona. Next, we continue on our way back to the city of Bajram Curri where the tour ends.
